Do you know my Jesus? This is one of life's most important questions. Has anyone ever introduced you to the most important one ever? The Jesus of the Bible is the only holy, sinless God-man to walk on the planet. The best picture of his life in a nutshell is found in the gospel of John. He is the way, the truth, and the life, the door, the good shepherd and many other things to those who love him.
Knowing Jesus if more than being religious. Nicodemus was a religious man but he thought of Jesus as only a good teacher: a Jewish rabbi (John 3). In order to know Jesus we have to admit some things about ourselves. We have to realize that we are all sinners. "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God" Romans 3:23 The glory of God is perfection or sinlessness. Sin is breaking the laws of God including the ten commandments.
When we ask ourselves, "Have I ever lied, or stolen, or cheated? Have I ever not respected my parents? Have I ever taken God's name in vain?" Most all of us who are trying, to be honest, have to say, "Yes!"
So we understand that we are sinful. What can a human do to pay for their sins against an infinitely holy God? How much good works would it take to earn God's forgiveness and a home in heaven? There is only one way that we can pay for our sin and that is eternal death in hell. "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life." Romans 6:23 We can't do enough good because we are not good. "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one." Romans 3:10
We are not only sinful but we can't save ourselves by paying for our own sins. That brings us back to Jesus. Only He could pay for our sins because He is sinless. He was willing to die for us on the cross and shed his lifeblood so that we could receive forgiveness of sins-"the gift of God".
How do you receive a gift? You reach out and take it. You don't have to work for it. It is free. But you can't ignore it and claim it is yours. "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart, man believeth unto righteousness: and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Romans 10: 9-13
If you claimed your free gift by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus, I would love to know.
