In praise of the fabric stash...

Updated: Jul 21, 2020

Sometimes you may feel that you have too much fabric and your stash is out of control, (are you becoming a hoarder?) But the way I see it, you never know what could happen or what you could need. Lately I've been so thankful for my fabric stash. I've seen the shelves of empty of fabric and at the same time I felt I finally had time to create. You can't imagine how glad I was that I had fabric at home...in my stash.

I was happy I had what I needed to make curtains for our my new house. It was mind easing to cut, measure, and sew what I had saved. I was glad that I had some fabric to make masks with and some fabric to supply others who were making masks. I'll share some photos of what I made but first I want to tell you how to get a fabric stash.

Once people know you sew they often will just give you fabric. Or call you while they are out yardsaling and ask you if you want a piece, or bolt, or box full. You can always take it all for little or no price and then later go through it, keeping what you want and getting rid of what you don't want. Another way to accumulate fabric is to go thrift shopping and buy a sheet or large piece of clothing to cut down to smaller items. Just think how many hand puppets or masks could be made out of a fresh-washed with bleach sheet from a thrift store. A third way to add to your stash is to shop with your coupons. JoAnn fabric store has great coupons and deals. One word of warning about a fabric stash. Unless you sew for several hours every day creating different items, you will need to set a limit on the amount of fabric you keep at a time. I use a tote and when it gets too full I go through it and get rid of the least desirable pieces.

Here are some of the items I have made during the last few weeks. The first set of curtains I cut off of a baby bassinet cover that I found at the Goodwill store for a few dollars. All that lace with pearls sewn on! It was just beautiful and had to come home with me.

And an easy sew, no hemming required, look at the stitching lines drawn on the pic.

I wanted to brighten up my kitchen with curtains of a lighter color so I pulled two pieces of fabric out of the stash and designed a lined curtain. Here is an easy tutorial on lined curtains.

Lastly, I want to show you the bath curtains. It is a two sheers hung on a double standard curtain rod from Walmart. But because the sheers are layered, they look a little fancy.

All these pieces came from my fabric stash. What have you made from your stash lately?
